Mixer wagons equipped for Compact TMR Feeding

The Compact TMR (Compact Feeding), a feeding concept for cattle, is has been discussed widely in the media due to its milk yield benefits. This relatively new concept from Denmark is also being implemented on individual farms in this country. It relies – and that´s what makes it special – on a moist, sticky, homogeneous feed mass. In addition to changes in the ratio, technical adjustments to the feed mixer wagon are necessary. Bernard van Lengerich Maschinenfabrik (BvL) starts right here by offering a variety of extra components for their feed mixer wagons.

In Compact Feeding, concentrated feed is soaked with large amounts of water (1:1) in the feed mixer for hours or even overnight. Only then the remaining feed components are added and mixed until they form a homogeneous, structurally poor mass. As a result, the animals can no longer select the feed, the nutrient intake should thus be relatively constant according to experts.

Adapting the feed mixer is one of the challenges when switching to this feeding concept. The Compact Feeding Plus package from BvL includes:

  • Compact Feeding Mixing auger: It is wider, shorter, with an extended blade arrangement and additional auger blade for stronger, more intensive mixing.
  • Stainless steel hard surfacing (V2A) on the mixing auger: maintains the edge on the turns and makes the auger more durable.
  • Stainless steel-lining Basic (V2A): Serves to protect the mixing trough due to the longer length of stay and longer mixing times.
  • Mixing screw seal: to protect the inside of the cone from water.

The benefit of the this system is that it is impossible for the dry components of the forage to be separated out from the rest of the mix, either during the feeding out process or by the cow pre-sorting. As a result, every cow is fed a more consistent ration, resulting in a yield improvement of up 2 litres per cow, in addition to potential improvements in milk quality.

New Vario Volume system ensures flexible container for BvL mixer wagons

Bernard van Lengerich Maschinenfabrik GmbH & Co. KG (BvL) has introduced a new Vario Volume extension system as an option for almost all its range of trailed mixer wagons. The Vario Volume attachment is hydraulically raised to increase the container volume by approx. 30 cm. This effectively increases the volume in a twin auger mixer by up to 3.5 m³.

When the feed is mixed and chopped, the Vario Volume extension can then be lowered again in order to be able to drive into low or restricted height sheds if necessary. For components that require a lot of space when mixing, such as straw bales, etc., the Vario Volume is a useful aid as it simply and effectively prevents feed components from spilling over the container edge.

The new BvL Vario Volume extension can also be fitted to feed mixers with a rear-mounted 2.0 straw blower. The straw blower is mechanically driven and has a high throughput of about 300 kg of straw per minute, which can be thrown up to 30 m. The stone trap and the softstart aid, round off the straw blower product range.

The Hustler machine is one of the best……..

“This Hustler machine is one of the best cattle feeding equipment that I’ve owned for a long time”

Callum Kettles is the Farm Manager for Hornby Hall Farms located near Penrith, England and he has owned a Hustler feedlot bale feeder for over a year. Check out what Callum has to say about it! Callum Kettles and his team farm 2,000 breading ewes at Hornby Hall. Callum was looking for a bale feeder able to feed out various types of hay and baleage to his ewes which are housed indoor. He talked to his local accredited Hustler dealer Rob Sunter at the Penrith depot, who organised a demo of the SL450X (LM105T) feed lot bale unroller on his farm

“This Hustler machine is one of the best cattle feeding equipment that I’ve owned for a long time”

From left: Heather (Hornby Hall farm operator), Rob (Carrs Billington dealership), Callum (Hornby Hall farm manager)

Callum is wrapped with his Hustler: it feeds out all his bales, it’s robust and it doesn’t require much maintenance.

The SL450X (LM105T) feedlot bale unroller is a self-loading 3-point-linkage mounted trough feeder suitable for feeding out into troughs, feed bunkers, over fences or onto feed pads a wide variety of mainly round bales and silage along with some square bales when using the optional sidebars. the SL450X (LM105T) comes with 6 major benefits:

  1. Maximum reach: with its large elevator, the SL450X (LM105T) feedlot bale unroller allows feeding out into hay baskets/cradles as well as troughs and feedpads
  2. Compact size: one the elevator is in up position, you’ll be able to go wherever your tractor goes, even in narrow barns.
  3. Easy to use: the SL450X (LM105T) feedlot bale unroller has single level feed control, making it very easy to use and ideal for share milkers or for indoor feeding.
  4. Toughest chain on the market: with its super strong roller chains (combined strength of 24,000lbs) and tough 40x40mm zinc-plated bars, the SL450X (LM105T) feedlot bale unroller won’t let you down
  5. Low maintenance: instead of bushes, the SL450X (LM105T) feedlot bale unroller is equipped with longer-lasting block bearings, mounted outboard to keep them clean and free of damage
  6. More safety: the high rear bar means the bale cannot screw off the back (optional side rails are available for maximum safety) which allows you or your staff to work with a safer piece of equipment.
